Nicholas Felton is a leader in the field of information visualization and personal data tracking. He is famous for his Personal Annual Reports, which charted his personal life in detail into beautifully minimal infographics compiled into annual-report format, weaving numerous measurements into a tapestry of graphs, maps, and statistics that reflect the year’s activities.
This intensive two-day workshop will explore the communication and narrative potential of information visualization. Starting with a presentation of his personal work as well as his current experiences as a member of the product design team at Facebook, Felton will address fundamental topics: how to search for stories and isolate a question, data gathering tools and methodologies, improving connections and the relevance of data, and the relevance of data and the value of data-based visual narratives.
Building from a foundation of core design concepts like typography, color, and composition, the workshop will proceed through graphing, mapping, and labeling approaches towards explorations with processing to create custom visualization applications.
Participants will gain an understanding of the tools and techniques of data visualization and leave with a framework for educated exploration and invention. This is a great workshop especially for information and communication designers, user interface designers, as well as media professionals that want to learn about the processes and techniques of data-based visual storytelling.
Required: Participants must bring their own laptop with Adobe Illustrator installed. Participants will also need to have a copy of the Processing software installed. (Free download) No prior experience with Processing programming is required.
This workshop is at full capacity. We are not able to accept any more entries at this point, but in case you are interested in a folllow-up workshop with Nicholas Felton or in any other upcoming workshops, please drop us a line with your contact details at email@example.com.
