To celebrate the launch of Deutschland verstehen we cordially invite you to an evening dedicated to this highly sought-after compendium of cutting-edge infographics that provides a deeper understanding of Germany.
Journalist and writer Ralf Grauel, co-editor of the book, will start off the event with an insightful presentation. A discussion between Grauel and his fellow editor, information graphics expert Jan Schwochow, that is moderated by journalist Kai Schächtele will follow and include time for Q&A. Afterwards, an exclusive book signing session will take place.
Deutschland verstehen is a book for anyone who wants to know who the Germans are and how they tick—an entertaining and informative exploration of German society, economy, and culture.
Deutschland verstehen is an unprecedented and lavishly designed atlas of fascinating infographics, charts, graphs, and statistics. The authors, without claiming to explain it all, lead the readers through characteristically German topics in eight loosely compiled chapters: “What we love,” “What we’re afraid of,” “What we’re particularly good at,” and more. These chapters show iconic structures such as the Reichstag from within; they tell of Prussians and Goethe as well as Love Parade and Oktoberfest. Deutschland verstehen illustrates political debates, pop charts, and the national healthcare system. It draws the family tree of the Red Army Faction, examines Germany's relationship to nuclear power, and looks at the impact of the country's business activities around the world. The book compares apples with potatoes, the Federal Republic of Germany with the former GDR, and even television talk show hosts Stefan Raab and Thomas Gottschalk. The result: infotainment at the highest level.
