Please join us to celebrate the launch of Gestalten’s new publication Out of the Blue: The Essence and Ambition of Finnish Design.
Hosted by The Academic Bookstore in Helsinki, the event starts off with a discussion with Marko Ahtisaari, Paola Suhonen, Harri Koskinen and Robert Klanten who will talk about what makes Finnish design Finnish and look at the skills, traditions, and ambitions of contemporary Finnish design and its enduring values. The talk will be moderated by Lisa Sounio-Ahtisaari. Afterwards, an exclusive book signing session will take place.
Out of the Blue showcases Finland’s unique design culture from legendary figures like Alvar Aalto and heritage manufacturers such as Marimekko, Iittala, Artek, or Nokia to a new contemporary generation of chefs, explorers, makers, and entrepreneurs. The book takes an insightful and entertaining look at the typical Finnish characteristics of inventiveness, community spirit, love of liberty, ongoing transformation, and the free rein to be wacky.
This event is free and open to the public.
About the speakers:
Marko Ahtisaari Born in 1969, Marko Ahtisaari is an entrepreneur, designer and investor. He is currently a Director's Fellow at the MIT Media Lab. Between 2002 and 2013 he worked in a number of capacities for Nokia, most recently as Executive Vice President of design and member of the leadership team. Prior to Nokia Marko was CEO and co-founder of Dopplr an online social network.
Paola Suhonen’s Ivana Helsinki fashion label began as a personal art project. Suhonen merged the disciplines that interested her—painting, textile design, fashion and later, film—to create expressive collections of clothes that were rich in narrative. Recently she has scooped up awards for her film, fashion and prestigious Pro Finlandia medal.
Harri Koskinen has become the recognisable face of new Finnish design. His main preoccupations—everyday design, innovation in products and manufacturing, refreshing and renewing traditions, all tackled without pretence or ego—are those of the wider industry. His Block Lamp, designed when a student, attracted so much interest that he set up his own studio, Friends of Industry, after graduating from the former University of Art and Design Helsinki. He now has his own brand, Hari Koskinen Works, and his appointment as design director at Iitala confirms his influential position in Finland’s design firmament.
Robert Klanten founded Gestalten in Berlin in 1995. As the publisher and editor-in-chief, he has released over 500 publications that explore contemporary creative culture and its context; discovering and documenting current developments in design, architecture, art, and lifestyle. Unlike a classic publisher, Klanten has always strived to go beyond publishing and has established Gestalten as an international think tank and impulse generator for innovative design.
