Frank Höhne

Philosophy of Bock
Posted by Lucas—08/2012

Frank Höhne brought us into his home and studio space in Berlin to show how (and why) he works as an illustrator. Pen in hand, Höhne works quickly, intuitively, and spontaneously, rarely with a plan, and always with his quirky and easygoing sense of humor.

Bockumenta 1

An Exhibition by Frank Höhne at Gestalten Space
Posted—07/2012

To celebrate the release of his first monograph, The Book of Bock, Gestalten is pleased to present a solo exhibition of illustrator Frank Höhne.

Frank Höhne’s style is idiosyncratic, sometimes childishly naïve. He works quickly, intuitively, spontaneously, and analog; he likes what can happen and go awry on paper. From a single line emerges an arrow, and then somehow—after corrections, painting over, and collage—emerges a picture. He is inspired by the things that make him human. As Höhne puts it, “a colonoscopy gives me eight times more input than a visit to a museum for applied something or other.”

Black Antoinette

An Exhibition by Olaf Hajek at Gestalten Space
Posted—06/2012

To celebrate the launch of Olaf Hajek’s second monograph Black Antoinette, Gestalten Space is proud to present a solo show by this internationally sought-after illustrative artist.

Black Antoinette is a collection of Olaf Hajek’s most recent work that was created over the last three years, a striking selection of personal artwork, editorial contracts, and commercial portraits that showcase a remarkable style that has become more free and painterly during this time. His colorful illustrations and textured paintings are infused with a folkloristic naivety and freshness. Hajek masterfully melds influences from West African and Latin American art to create surreal juxtapositions of fairy tale fantasies and disordered realities. His magical realism enriches the perspective of anyone viewing his work.
