Jonathan Corum is the science graphics editor at The New York Times. As a member of the Times graphics desk, he designs print and interactive graphics with a focus on clarity, simplicity and elegance.

The two-day workshop will explore the fundamentals of information design through the process of sketching, designing, building, and refining news graphics.

Topics will include research and data gathering, iterative sketching, visual storytelling, data visualization, illustration, and graphic design.

We will practice simplifying, translating, and visually communicating complex information to readers who might be busy or easily distracted. We will discuss print and interactive graphics, and participants will be encouraged to produce a final print graphic.

The workshop will include an overview of several programming tools, including Python, pandas and d3, but no programming will be required.

If you are interested in information design or visual journalism, or would like a better idea of how the Times graphics desk works, please join us in Berlin! This is primarily a design workshop, but editors or journalists with an interest in information graphics are also welcome.

Requirements: Participants should bring their own laptop with Adobe Illustrator installed. Adobe Photoshop is recommended but not required. If you normally draw with a mouse or tablet, please bring that as well.

"Infographic Thinking – Workshop with Francesco Franchi"

After years of speaking at festivals and hosting workshops at international universities and design institutions, we at Gestalten decided it was high time we develop our own series to offer even more insight into the world of visual culture—beyond our books—to benefit our design community.

In the fall of 2011, we launched a new series of workshops at Gestalten Space, our concept store and gallery space in Berlin-Mitte.

Drawing from our international network of designers who are pushing contemporary creative expression to new frontiers, Gestalten put together an engaging program of workshops with internationally-celebrated industry creatives Jan Schwochow from Germany’s leading infographics studio Golden Section Graphics, House Industries’ head letterer Ken Barber, 3D illustrator Sarah Illenberger, and renowned graphic designer Mario Lombardo—designed to challenge, inspire, and fuel bold new ideas.

In summer 2012, Francesco Franchi, one of the masters of information design and the much-awarded art director of IL – Intelligence in Lifestyle, led a two-day workshop on Infographic Thinking, guiding the attendees through the left-and-right-brained process of interpreting, contextualizing, and visually representing information.

For students and young professionals looking to equip themselves with practical skills, or for experienced professionals interested in gaining new insights, our comprehensive workshops offer unique and intimate creative learning experiences.
