Want to work with us? Submit your portfolio and a copy of your C.V. to work [at] gestalten.com to be added to our pool of freelancers. We love all things print, but please do not apply by post—only portfolios submitted as a PDF will be accepted.

Book Proposals

To propose a book for Gestalten, send us a brief description with synopsis, content structure, a list of contributors, and any ideas you might have about the format to proposals [at] gestalten.com. Be sure to include a selection of images to help us best understand the visual quality of the project, as well as some background information about yourself.

At Little Gestalten, we are always on the lookout for fresh ideas and engaging illustrations that will be enjoyed both by young readers and their discerning parents. This can range from picture-book submissions and finished manuscripts to ideas that are still being developed. Prepare a proposal, then get in touch with our editors at littlegestalten [at] gestalten.com

Our editors will review each proposal. Please bear in mind that answering might take some time.

  • Working Student: Project Management

    Starting in January at Gestalten Headquarters in Berlin

    Founded in Berlin in 1995, Gestalten is best known for its more than 600 books about contemporary creative culture, the majority of which are conceived in house. They document and anticipate vital movements in design, lifestyle, illustration, architecture, fashion, photography, travel, and art. Providing both inspiration and practical value, they explore new creative fields in ways not yet seen before.

    We are currently looking for a working student, who will assist the project management team for 18 hours per week.

    Your profile: 

    • You are currently studying (Bachelor or Master), ideally with a focus on project management or publishing 
    • You are fluent in both English and German
    • You have an interest in publishing and a wide range of topics
    • You have excellent organizational skills, detail orientation and can manage time, budget and quality
    • You have strong communication and negotiation skills and like to talk on the phone
    • You are interested in image acquisition and image rights

    Your tasks:

    • Acquisition of images and texts for various book projects
    • Rights clearance of images 
    • Communicating directly with the contributors of our book projects
    • Assisting with various tasks in the Project Management team

  • Communications Manager, Full time

    Founded in Berlin in 1995, Gestalten is best known for its more than 600 books about contemporary creative culture, the majority of which are conceived in house. They document and anticipate vital movements in design, lifestyle, illustration, architecture, fashion, photography, travel, and art. Providing both inspiration and practical value, they explore new creative fields in ways not yet seen before.

    We are currently looking for a Communications Manager who will be responsible for developing and nurturing strong relationships with international media and work on the day-to-day planning and execution of communication projects. Together with Communications team, you will secure key placements in press, including both print and online publications focusing on design, lifestyle, fashion and culture.

    Your profile:

    • University degree in Media & Communications or similar

  • Senior Communications Manager (Full-Time)

    Starting asap at Gestalten Headquarters in Berlin

They document and anticipate vital movements in design, lifestyle, illustration, architecture, fashion, photography, travel, and art. Providing both inspiration and practical value, they explore new creative fields in ways not yet seen before.

    We are looking for a Senior Communications Manager who will be responsible for positioning the Gestalten’s communication across all channels.

    You develop and nurture strong relationships with media and work on the day-to-day planning and execution of Communication projects. You will secure key placements in press, including both print and online publications focusing on design, lifestyle, fashion and culture.

    You have a deep understanding for our industry and target group and are the key person to spread the word about our activities nationally and internationally. Together with Sales & Marketing you will be responsible for defining and implementing a 360 degree communication strategy in order to drive traffic, conversion, and brand image.

     

    Your primary responsibilities will include:

    • Developing an effective internal and external communication strategy across all channels
    • Leading the in-house communication teams and managing the work with agencies/external partners
    • Drive PR innovation through digital media, bloggers and influencers
    • Ensure a consistent and clear message in line with company mission and philosophies throughout relevant communication channels
    • Direct the production and approval of press releases, photography and other PR tools necessary to communicate image and product
    • Track and evaluate the outcome of Communication activities together with Sales & Marketing in order to generate learnings for future activities

     

    Your qualifications:

    • University Degree in Media & Communications or similar
    • At least 5-7 years and a minimum of 2 years of experience in a leadership position in PR, marketing or communication with a strong track record
    • Strong relationships with consumer and design press; detailed knowledge of emerging media and design trends
    • Strong track record in securing press results and feature story coverage
    • Passion for design, specific design industry experience is a strong positive
    • Excellent writing, communication and presentation skills in both German and English
    • Strategic thinker with a result-focused approach and positive forward-looking mindset with “can do” attitude
    • Ability to handle multiple concurrent tasks and changing priorities
    • Excellent team player who can communicate well across multiple teams

    • Several years of experience as a copy writer and managing copy-writers, copy-editors and proofreaders and/or similar position in a relevant area

    • Experience in handling and assuring quality for numerous translations and transcreations at the same time

    Your responsibilities will include:

    • Researching and writing clear, concise and original copy for our non-fiction illustrated books and children’s titles, this can include profiles and project texts, and project texts, features, headlines, captions, and glossaries
    • Copy writing and editing text for sales material, like catalogue and back cover texts
    • Proofreading copy to check spelling and grammar
    • Acquisition and pooling of freelancers (copy writers, translators, copy editors and proofreaders)
    • Briefing of writers and copy editors in close collaboration with our editors
    • Assessing text quality of texts by external copy writers, translators, copy editors and proofreaders, giving feedback and ensuring a consistent quality in line with our in-house style guide
    • Working on several projects at once, sometimes under pressure and often to tight deadlines
