Book Proposals

To propose a book for Gestalten, send us a brief description with synopsis, content structure, a list of contributors, and any ideas you might have about the format to proposals [at] gestalten.com. Be sure to include a selection of images to help us best understand the visual quality of the project, as well as some background information about yourself.

At Little Gestalten, we are always on the lookout for fresh ideas and engaging illustrations that will be enjoyed both by young readers and their discerning parents. This can range from picture-book submissions and finished manuscripts to ideas that are still being developed.   • Editor (Full-Time)


    Starting asap at Gestalten Headquarters in Berlin 


    Founded in Berlin in 1995, Gestalten is best known for its more than 600 books about contemporary creative culture, the majority of which are conceived in house. They document and anticipate vital movements in design, lifestyle, illustration, architecture, fashion, photography, travel, and art. Providing both inspiration and practical value, they explore new creative fields in ways not yet seen before.

    We are currently seeking an Editor with a demonstrable background in the world of publishing to acquire and contribute to our forthcoming book projects. We’re looking for someone with a strong network, who knows about Interior Design and Architecture, who’s out and about, who’s up on the latest trends, and who has something to say upcoming movements in design and visual culture.

    Your profile:

    • You have a journalistic background and 3–5 years working experience in lifestyle or service-driven editorial
    • You have profound knowledge of and a proven track record in both Interior Design and Architecture communities
    • You have access to exciting, original, and newly-developed networks and communities
    • You have a discerning eye for distinct projects, a finger on the pulse of what content our readers will want both today and tomorrow, and a strong strategic and economic understanding 
    • You are a team player with the ability to inspire and convince others of ideas and the organizational skills to make these ideas happen
    • You have a strong sense for the visual and content-related standards of high quality lifestyle publications
    • You have a structured workflow paired with the ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment
    • You are comfortable professionally working in both German and English


    Your primary responsibilities will include:

    • You research current trends and topics to develop and prepare forthcoming book projects
    • You identify potential contributors and acquire partners to realize new projects 
    • You realize economically successful book projects tailored to our target groups according to our internal guidelines and standards

  • Editorial Assistant (Full-time or part-time)

    Founded in Berlin in 1995, Gestalten is best known for its more than 600 books about contemporary creative culture, the majority of which are conceived in house. They document and anticipate vital movements in design, lifestyle, illustration, architecture, fashion, photography, travel, and art. Providing both inspiration and practical value, they explore new creative fields in ways not yet seen before.

    We are currently looking for a new colleague to assist our editorial team with acquiring images and clearing image rights for at least 20 hours per week on minimum of 3 days.


    Your profile:

    • You have excellent project management skills, detail orientation and can manage time, budget and quality
    • You have strong communication and negotiation skills and like to talk on the phone
    • You are familiar with databases and an MS office pro 
    • You are interested in image acquisition and image rights
    • You have an interest in publishing and a wide range of topics
    • You are fluent in both English and German


    Your tasks:

    • Acquisition of images and texts for various book projects
    • Rights clearance of images
    • Communicating directly with the contributors of our book projects
    • Assisting with various tasks in the editorial team

  • Senior Communications Manager (Full-Time)

    Founded in Berlin in 1995, Gestalten is best known for its more than 600 books about contemporary creative culture, the majority of which are conceived in house. They document and anticipate vital movements in design, lifestyle, illustration, architecture, fashion, photography, travel, and art. Providing both inspiration and practical value, they explore new creative fields in ways not yet seen before.

    We are currently looking for a Senior Communications Manager who will be responsible for developing and nurturing strong relationships with media and work on the day-to-day planning and execution of Communication projects. You will secure key placements in press, including both print and online publications focusing on design, lifestyle, fashion and culture.


    Your profile:

    • You have a university degree marketing/communication/PR or similar
    • You have several years of experience in a leadership position in PR, marketing or communication with a proven track record designing and executing successful public relations campaigns
    • You have strong relationships with consumer and design press in our key markets (GAS region, UK and USA) and detailed knowledge of emerging media and design trends
    • You have a strong track record in securing press results and feature story coverage
    • You have a passion for design, specific design industry experience is a strong positive
    • You have the know-how to convincingly present our brand and products at internal and external events and network with customers and partners
    • You have excellent writing, communication and presentation skills in both German and English
    • You are a strategic thinker with a result-focused approach and positive forward-looking mindset with “can do” attitude
    • You are able to handle multiple concurrent tasks and changing priorities
    • You are an excellent team player who can communicate well across multiple teams


    Your primary responsibilities will include:

    • Developing an effective internal and external communication strategy and designing and executing public relations campaigns at a national and international level 
    • Developing media relation strategies, leveraging existing media relationships and cultivating new contacts within business, industry media, and institutions 
    • Evaluating opportunities and establish solid relations with international key business partners
    • Directing the production and approval of press releases, photography and other PR tools necessary to communicate image and product
    • Managing media inquiries and interview requests and creating press releases, photography and other PR tools necessary to communicate image and product
    • Leading the in-house communication team and managing the work with agencies/external partners
    • Ensuring a consistent and clear message in line with company mission and philosophies throughout relevant communication channels
    • Monitoring, analyzing and communicating PR results together with our Sales and Marketing departments, in order to generate learnings for future activities

They document and anticipate vital movements in design, lifestyle, illustration, architecture, fashion, photography, travel, and art. Providing both inspiration and practical value, they explore new creative fields in ways not yet seen before.

    We are currently seeking a Copy Editor who will be responsible for the textual and lingual quality of all written contributions across all Gestalten’s channels.


    Your profile:

    • You have at least four years of editorial experience, preferably in the book publishing industry and are well-versed at copyediting and proofreading
    • You have a degree in journalism, English or German literature or a related field
    • You are experienced in handling and assuring quality for numerous translations and transcreations at the same time
    • You have an impeccable attention to detail and are excellent at spelling and grammar
    • You have a structured workflow paired with the ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment 
    • You are proactive and always communicate clearly
    • You have a good judgment regarding when to make a change and when to move something upline for approval
    • You are a native speaker or fluent in both German and US English

     

    Your primary responsibilities will include:

    • Managing multiple projects while maintaining high standards of quality control and tight production schedules
    • Recruiting freelance writers, translators, copyeditors, proofreaders and oversee their work 
    • Assigning & briefing external copywriters and copy editors in close cooperation with the editorial team
    • Assessing the quality of products delivered by external copy writers, translators, copy editors and proofreaders, giving feedback and ensuring a consistent quality in line with Gestalten’s in-house style guide as well as prompt delivery within the set schedule
    • Researching and writing clear, concise and original copy, high-level editing or proofreading of texts for selected books
    • Drafting copy for promotional & sales materials
    • Updating and improving the Gestalten’s text style guide and text handling workflow
