Today‘s superhero comics, first of all the so-called graphic novels, are designed in a very detailed way.
All the lines drawn with India ink are placed in the right position in order to show the character‘s explicit facial expression or gesture. Shadows, lights and color effects are used to highlight the mood and depth of those images.
The project named Squared Superheroes resists these qualities of superhero comics. Reduced to squared forms, 201 superheroes – previously created by DC Comics and Marvel – are visualized in a minimalist manner.
Here the main focus of attention is not on specific facial expressions, gestures, shadows, lights and other detailed characteristics. The focus is just on above-named simplified illustrations, reduced to basic shapes and a small chart of color range that is required to identify the respective superhero-character.
