When did it all start ?
My love of books and treasures made of paper—and particularly in picture books—started a very long time ago. As a child, I submersed myself in visual worlds and stories from books and these pictures are etched in my mind. Picture books taught me to experience my environment very vividly. However, for the last 15 years, I worked as a designer and architect; I spent 10 of those as a partner at VON M in Stuttgart. After the birth of my first daughter in 2009, I rediscovered children’s books. After almost seven years of passionate research and collecting of picture books, I can confirm that really amazing children’s books do still exist, and I felt compelled to open a shop. We opened Buchstäbchen on November 5, 2016.
Why did you decide to open the store?
In our extremely fast-paced times, I am convinced that we need to preserve analog interfaces and the decelerating, sensuous counterpoints to our digitalized lives. Our children are digital natives, and new media, social networks, and virtual worlds are integral parts of their lives, but that does not mean that we can't inspire them with the wonderful world of books.
How would you describe the neighborhood in which Buchstäbchen is located?
Stuttgart West is one of Stuttgart's liveliest districts. Lots of families, creative talents, and artists live here. In the last five years, a lot has changed, and many lovely little shops and galleries have settled in the area.
In terms of books and other merchandise, what do you offer your customers?
In addition to children’s books, we sell games, paper art, illustrations, and prints, as well as a fine selection of literature for adults.
What are your favorite Gestalten books?
As designer, my private library contains many wonderful books from Gestalten on art, design, and architecture. But the one that touched me most was definitely the book I Love You Always.
What are your customers’ favorite Gestalten books?
The book All My Animals sells very well. But let's be honest: who can resist those wonderful blue eyes!
What kinds of people shop at Buchstäbchen? Who might be seen visiting the store?
The children’s book topic touches nearly everyone emotionally. We often have customers between the ages of 0 to 102 who leave the shop with a smile on their faces.
Do you do anything at your store besides sell books? Do you, for example, have any events or exhibitions there?
We host book presentations, exhibitions, and workshops in Buchstäbchen that are designed to inspire children and adults for the beauty of books, printing, typography, and paper. We don't just want to sell books. We want to be a place in which children and adults can escape to a fantasy worlds with all their senses.
Is there anything else about the store that you'd like us to mention?
Reading makes you smarter. Reading keeps you grounded. Reading creates a sense of familiarity. Reading brings people together.
