Toshiki Okazaki opened Zakka in 1994. The following is an interview with him about his store.
What was the reason behind the opening of the store?
We wanted to establish a shop and space for a variety of creators and artists. So, we selected books and products to help inspire their ideas. Our store is not only selling merchandise but also distributes artists’ works and products.
Could you describe the neighborhood in which the store is located?
Our store is located in New York City in an area where Soho, Nolita, Chinatown and Little Italy meet. There are a lot of shops of great individuality gathered around here.
Please describe the kinds of books and other merchandise that you carry. What do you offer your customers?
We carry design and art books from a variety of categories. We also sell t-shirts that are handmade by artists, artist character goods, Japanese designer toys, etc†¦
What are your favorite dgv books? What are your customers' favorite dgv books?
Most dgv books are very poplar at our store so this is a difficult question to answer. But LOCALIZER 1.0 is an unforgettable book for me because it was the first book I ordered from dgv.

Who might be seen visiting the store? What kinds of people shop there?
New York is a very creative city so we see fashion designers, graphic designers, editors and edge people.
Do you do anything at your store besides sell books? Do you, for example, have any events or exhibitions there?
We often have exhibitions by artists. We also produce some projects such as a T-SHIRTS SHOW and TOY PROJECT, which feature experimental design.
