French photographer Romain Thiery grew up in Perigord, an ancient province adjacent to the Pyrenees that is lush with ruins dating back to the Roman Empire. His mother, in fact, started a list of the places forgotten over time; as an adult Thiery joined in, and his passion for the past is front and center in the “Remind me a past grandeur” series. Now working near Montpellier, France, Thiery travels across Europe in search of architectural artifacts, documenting abandoned buildings and highlighting the marks left behind both by nature’s attempt at reclaiming the space and by the lives lived in their walls. “One of my most fervent wishes is to keep the traces of those who are forgotten,” he says, “Just before time makes them invisible”.
