Scenes from this Year’s Hot Rod & Custom Show in Yokohama
When Mooneye’s own Shige Suganuma sends an invite, the top motorcycle and car builders come. The 26th Annual Hot Rod & Custom Show in Yokohama, Japan, proved to be the hotspot for those who wanted experience the wildest choppers and custom cars earlier this month. Many of the vehicles featured at the convention were built or customized in Japan, but builders from the US and other parts of the world joined the party for a few days of talking shop.
Together with Hermann Köpf, photographer and publisher of BRUMMM, we went to see the wildest cars and bikes, catching glimpses of the creativity that are only found in Japan. On Sunday night, the local Lowriders group revved their way through Shibuya, leaving vivid impressions of the day hammering in the heads of all attending; on Monday, the French gentlemen from the Southsiders MC–Vincent Prat, Jerome Allé, Julien Aze–took us for the first Wheels & Waves Japan ride out through Kamakura, a local hotspot for surfers, then along the coast. With riders like Steve Caballero, Cycle Zombies, Go Takamine and Matsumi from Bratstyle, Michael Lichter, Dan Collins (Old Gold Garage), David Borras of El Solitario, and more, it was a lively group of builders and makers. One thing is for sure: We’ll be back!
