The Seattle-Based Photographer Turns Fun and Games into Elaborate Balancing Acts

Still-Lifes by Amanda Ringstad

visual culture

There's a playful spirit in the work of photographer Amanda Ringstad. With bright colors and an array of shapes, textures, and materials, her photographs are defined by spontaneity and open-minded experimentation.“Playing and making mistakes is crucial for growth,” she says.

Ringstad’s still-life photographs are made using mostly second-hand materials—“I hate how much waste can be involved in a shoot”—and works freely with fruits, vegetables, and other organic matter. With dramatic lighting and a broad palette, her pieces range from subtle and simple to dramatic and tense. See more work from photographers, designers, and other creatives who are reinventing the classic art form in our book The Still Life.
