Tom M Johnson’s Booths
Putting the Focus on Pittsburgh’s Parking Lot Attendants
For a city of its size, Pittsburgh has a relatively absent public transportation system, and commuters from across Pennsylvania depend on for-hire parking lots scattered throughout the city. It was in one of these lots that photographer Tom M Johnson first felt the connection between the check-in booth and its attendant. The booths themselves are imbued with their own personalities, adorned with hand-written notes and either painted with a fresh coat or showing the years of use in the splintering wood—artifacts from the attendants, whose work lives are lived within these four walls. Johnson explored this relationship in his series Booths, which can be found below. See more work by photographers around the world in our selection of Gestalten books about photography.
