Yoo Hyun's Photorealistic Paper Cut Portraits
Marilyn Monroe, Pablo Picasso and Frida Kahlo Carved from Paper
Armed with an exacto knife and tweezers, Korean artist Yoo Hyun carves intricate portraits of famous personalities like Marilyn Monroe, Pablo Picasso and Frida Kahlo out of paper. He meticulously slices away thin strips of paper from a large sheet, weaving a zig-zag pattern which, when viewed from a distance, appears to be a photo-realistic portrait.
Since the portraits are see-through, Hyun’s handwork can be laid over any background consisting of bright colors or patterns, making the same piece look completely different. While he mostly used monochromatic paint splatters in the past, he's currently experimenting with more colorful versions or just people holding them up in front of their bodies.
